Driving a vehicle in winter, in the regions where winter is particularly harsh and severe leaving the roads snowy and icy, is something strenuous and not many favour this. So much so, there are many myths making rounds to make the matter worse. Here we are going to bust some of them and will lend you helping hand in driving better during peak winter and icy slippery road conditions.
1. Pour boiling water over window glass for clearing snowy glasses and use hair dryer for thawing door locks: Never pour boiling water onto window glass as high temperature variation will cause cracking or shattering of glass. Heat of hair dryer will damage the sensors of door locking system.
2. Snow from my window will automatically get cleared if I drive too fast: Trying to drive with snow on glass is very dangerous. Start the engine and let the heater work for you. The heater will increase temperature inside the cabin and will result into melting the snow on glass.
3. Driving four wheel and all wheel drive is very safe during winter, I don’t need to slow down: precaution is better than cure! Go slow. No matter what control you drive or what type of wheels are fixed. Be it non-studded tires or any other winter variant, your speed does not get the privilege. Driving at moderate speed to avoid any mishap is wiser than repenting later. Your car or SUV non-studded tires is still at risk if your speed is not controlled on icy and slippery roads.
4. I live in south so do not need to worry about snow or ice: But there is a possibility of black ice or snow like any other northern country when the temperatures dip. Dipping temperatures are the reason behind snowfall. It can happen anywhere. So living in the misconception and not being ready to deal with any worse situation would turn unwise. It can also happen when the mountain snow re-freezes. Rather it turns more fatal than normal snowflakes. This melted and refrozen ice becomes harder and yields slippery surface.
These myth busters are very much useful in regular driving as people fall prey to many misconceptions and try out innovative trouble shooters and end up in bigger troubles. It is always good to understand the reason behind any phenomenon and counter act in accordance. Acting to mitigate any problem without real knowledge of the problem and its proper solution will always have adverse effects so, learn and understand the problem well, then try to find the solution for its root cause.
